Since the COVID-19 crisis, hate is severely directed toward the Asian community. Fear grew logarithmically as time passes, and because the virus originated from China, a lot of people assume that any person of Asian descent is a carrier. In Montreal, the buddhist pagodas and the Chinatown were vandalized; Asian restaurants and markets are struggling because people are scared of contracting the virus simply by being there. The Asian community is being assaulted with violent insults; even a person of Korean descent fell victim to a knife crime. The pieces are a form of protest against the hate, discrimination and ignorance that is witnessed globally during the pandemic. A hastag called #AsiansAreNotTheVirus (or #LesAsiatiquesNeSontPasLeVirus, in french) was created to denounce the hate speech and the vitriol that stemmed from fear, prejudice and ignorance, and to clarify the misconceptions that pervades the conversation.
